Occupied by Union troops during the Civil War as headquarters and hospitals, Beaufort's antebellum mansions and other pre-Civil War structures escaped destruction and still stand today in downtown Beaufort... a National Historic Landmark District.

The quaint Bay Street shopping district, bordered by Waterfront Park on the Beaufort River, is home to a variety of delightful shops, local art galleries, fine restaurants, and horse drawn carriage tours. Downtown Bay Street and Waterfront Park host several annual festivals and events which celebrate the heritage, food and culture of this lowcountry community.

A short stroll from the downtown shopping district and you are transported in time to historical "old south" residential neighborhoods, on streets lined with ancient
moss-draped oaks and magnolias, and with spectacular water views around nearly every corner.
